The Roman bulla was a protective amulet worn by boys in ancient Rome. It was typically a small, hollow pendant made of gold, silver, or leather, often shaped like a pouch or container. Inside the bulla, Romans would place charms or amulets believed to ward off evil spirits or bring good luck.

The bulla was usually worn around the neck, suspended by a chain or leather cord, and was commonly given to infants shortly after birth. It was worn throughout childhood until the child reached adulthood, at which point the bulla would be ritually removed and dedicated to the household gods. Girls wore a lunula which was similar to a bulla.

The bulla symbolized protection and served as a talisman to safeguard the child from harm. It was an important part of Roman cultural and religious traditions, reflecting the belief in the importance of protective symbols and rituals in ancient Roman society.

Similar to the Roman bulla, a bullae pendant was a type of protective amulet worn by individuals of both sexes and all ages in Irish cultures. These pendants were often made of metal, such as bronze or silver, and featured intricate designs or symbols. Like the Roman bulla, they were believed to offer protection against malevolent forces and bring good fortune to the wearer.
